3 simple reasons to pack your lunch each day
Bringing your lunch is a great way take to solve a few of your concerns and take control of both your wellness and money. Let’s take a look at the three reasons how bringing your lunch each day will help you.
Save money in your weekly and monthly budget
One of your goals is probably to cut stress out of your life. And concerns around money is probably a top stressor.
In the long term, packing your lunch will generally save you money. Unless your company offers free lunch, you’re going to pay more per meal than if you brought your own.
With a little planning ahead you can assemble your lunch easily so you save money each day. Maybe saving $5 a day sounds like very little money, but by the end of the month it really adds up.
If you haven’t brought your lunch in the past, you might have a a few upfront expenses. You may need to buy a new lunch bag or food storage containers.
An insulated lunch bag with built it freezer packs is a great way to keep your lunch fresh if you have a longer commute.
Control the quality of your meals
When was the last time you looked at the ingredients and nutrition facts on prepared meals? Especially the salt and fat content. Is there a series of ingredients you can’t pronounce?
Trust me I get it. When you’re working on a super busy schedule, easy access food keeps you going. But at the same time. eating better quality food will help you manage wellness and hopefully not fall into a deep burnout.
You can avoid eating poorly if you prepare your lunch in advance. By the time you’re ready to eat, you may not have the mental space or energy to put too much effort into preparing food.
Having a meal ready and waiting for you helps you make healthy choices.
Use more of your lunch hour for other tasks or self care
How much time to do currently spend trying to decide what to eat for lunch and then standing on line?
And then maybe you start getting hangry or worse have to skip lunch because you don’t have enough time to even grab food.
Even if your company offers free lunch, it isn’t actually free. You likely end up working through your lunch or not even going outside. For the added cost to the company, they’re looking to increase the productivity (or working hours) of their employees.
By packing your lunch you can use the time to fit in other tasks or self care.
For example I usually try to take a quick walk outside around the building to stretch my legs, get some air, and take my eyes off the computer screens.
You can pick some extra exercise to help keep you working at your best, and manage self care. Let’s face it, we all need a little more time away from our desks especially when our jobs entail a lot of sitting.
Or you could also use the time to run errands you’re struggling to fit in during the week. Instead of stressing about when you’ll take care of a few errands or tasks, bringing your lunch allows you to use the time to tackle a few quick things on your to-do list.
What to do if you have no extra time to pack your lunch
Here are a few quick tips to help you stay on track with bringing your lunch if you don’t have the extra time.
- Pack as much of your lunch the night before so it’s ready to go in the morning. Your morning is already busy and you don’t need to add another task.
- Simple lunches such as salads allow you to “chop and drop”. Minimal prepration foods keep this quick and easy.
- Make a larger dinner so you can bring your leftovers the next day for lunch.
- Spend a little time on weekends batch cooking food such as chicken you can freeze to eat later. Certain foods store really well in the freezer and are simple to make.
